Mridangam –
Chenda – including almost identical Chande of Tulu Nadu. Uses
2 sticks. A heavy drum.
Maddale - used in Yakshagana and Tala-Maddale. Creates sounds
similar to Mridangam and Pakhavaja.
Thavil – usually with Nadasvaram. Used extensively in Tamil Nadu, as well as throughout Dakshina Bharat accompanying the Nadasvaram. Hands of one end use Conchshell finger inserts and the other uses a wooden stick.
Maddalam – used in various Cherala Artforms. Conchshell finger inserts are used for the smaller end for louder sound
like Chenda. In all it produces sounds like Mridangam and Chenda. A heavy drum. example
