Malaya Nadu - Region

Malaya is the original name of the entire "Western Ghats". Over time the term came to refer to the Southern half - from Gomantak to Kumarikanda. Further the "Malayalam" speaking portion came to retain the term - Malai Nadu, while the Kannad speaking portion - "Malnad".

The Malaya Nadu - Region is divided between Malayalam speaking areas and plus some Tamil speaking areas.

Geologically the Vynad and Udhagai portions are part of the primarily Kannada speaking Dakshina plateau highland - Malnad - Region. they are included under Malaya Nadu - Region due to linguist-ethnic reason.

Modern Religious regions
With the change of time - relgions have formed new "modern" regions
At present the Malayalam speaking portion is is about : 55% Hindu (both nominal and religious), 25 % Muslim and 20% Christian.
Regions based on the modern composition of the Malayalam speaking portion can be roughly divided into 2 :
- the Hindu/Muslim North half
- the Hindu/Christian South half
 or into 3
- the Central Hindu / Christian sub-region
- the North Hindu / Muslim sub-region
- the South primarily Hindu sub-region
