In the
past I have wondered several times what the Vegetarian Map of Bharat is.
Recently
news sites have made the most of a "Government of India survey" which
stating that India is 30% Vegetarian and makes figures of the Vegetarian status
of the states.
Any
reader of that "survey" would know that the figures of that survey
are not reality. (the most ridiculous
being Andhra-Telanga and Gujarat.)
What is
the value of a Survey if it doesnt depict reality ?(What is the value of
"sample surveys" (whether doctored or not) if they do not depict
reality).
I cannot
but conclude that the 2014 survey is entirely doctored - having as its purpose to depict the
population as non Vegetarian. It was carried out during the Congress regime and
released on Janurary 1 2014 - before the General Election of 2014. The
intention of the results would have all to do with a noticed trend of
Vegetarian voting for BJP and Non-Vegetarian voting for "Secular"
parties.
What is
the real status then ? No full survey of the country has been done.
But one
source of authentic statistics is available - search engines of Matrimonial
sites. A few well known sites provide this option in the profile for which in
the survey of this study and map only statistics from www.bharatmatrimony.com
have been used.
This
study was made possible by, and the reader should be grateful to :
www.bharatmatrimony.com
The jeevansathi.com matrimonial website also has a vegetarian and non-vegetarian option, and a large number of profiles - but can choose both vegetarian and non vegetarian at the same time and thus are Not usable.
Methodology
bharatmatrimony.com statistics are from age group between 18-40
results do not include "not specified" profiles
results do not include "not specified" profiles
The
statistics are based upon Language and or State state of residence results as
available from the matrimonial.
For
example by searching for all profiles according to "state" and
"language" one will come up with relevant profiles - from these
results one can view the Vegetarian or Non Vegetarian status of these profiles.
"A
state having 5000 male profiles out of which 3000 are vegatarian = 60% out of a
total of 5000 "results""
In the notes : "Results" means total number of persons surveyed (not total number vegetarian surveyed)
- about
1/3 of profiles on bharatmatrimony.com have "not indicated" which could mean
anything. - these results have been discarded altogether ie are not counted as
"results".
Limitation
of this method are :
- online
matrimonials generally represent a "educated class" and not society
in its entirety
- some
areas/languages have very few matrimonial profiles
- concerning "state results" there is a observable and understandable trend of migrants using online matrimonials
- concerning "state results" there is a observable and understandable trend of migrants using online matrimonials
Most
states-languages have about 10,000 to 2 lakh profiles which is suffiecent
number to make a reliable survey - these figures are included with the area
outline - click to view.
