The North India Plain - Super-Region

Uttara Bharatiya ?

Low Elevation Alluvial Plains of the Ganga River and its Tributaries as well as the Ganga Delta Plains (Bangal) in India and the Punjab Plains (Sindhu Basin) in India.

The North India Plains, (here) includes only the highly arable plains to the north and not the Desert Plains to the West and the hilly Bundelkand plains - which are normally included in "The North Indian Plains"(which compasses areas both in India and Pakistan - this Super-Region only includes areas in India).


Languages - Hindi Language Family, 
Panjabi, Bangla, Maithili, Magahi, Angika.

It is the largest arable belt in India.It is the Most Densenly Populated part of India - ?% of the Population of India live on the North India Plains, with an average of ?? Per Sq Km.

The Regions/Portions in India of Punjab(Sindhu Basin Plains) and the Ganga Delta Plains (Bangal) though Geologically distinct from the otherwise Ganga Plains - are included here as they are Contiguous Alluvial Plains.

- The Plains of Bundelkhand are not included for 2 reasons: half of the Bundelkhand Plains are rocky/hilly (
unlike the rest of the North India Plains) and are part of the Bundelkhand Region which is mixed Plateau-Plains.
- Other smaller plains areas are also excluded, when part of other mostly non Plains or Semi Plains Regions.
- Plains of Nepal are included as the Peoples-Languages are contigous and India-Nepal have a open border.

The North India Plains - Regions and Languages


The Regions of the Ganga Plains are generally based on the variation in Languages or Dialects (refer to the Bharatiya Bhashaavali page). The Culture otherwise further varies at the Sub-Regional level.

Due to the High Population Density of the North India Plains, Each Region is the Equivalent of a Separate State. The exceptions are the Punjab Region(Hindi/Punjabi) and due to possible small size the 8th and 9th regions.

The color ranges as indicative of the Muslim Population of these areas are :

5-10% - Dark Orange
10-20% - Lighter Orange
15-25% - Lighter Orange
20-30% - Lightest Orange
30-50% - Yellows
50-60% - Light Green
