Tripura Hills - Region

The Region is comprised of Hills of the Tripura Hill System in Indian Territory and some adjoining Bangal plain at the foothills in the Barak Valley. Apart from the Indigenous mostly Kachari Tripuri Hill Peoples/Tribes the area is also inhabited by Sylheti Bangla Peoples for which see the Shilahatta Region on the Other Maps - Trans-National Regions page






Sub-Regions of the Tripura Hills Region

The 2 Sub-Regions are based on the present political boundaries, which are the basis of different Hindu-Muslim compositions.
The hills of both sub-regions were mainly Non Bangla Speaking Hindu-Tribes until 1947, when Bangla Hindu began migrating to the hills as well. The Bangal Plain in the Barak Valley Sub-Region are and were always ethnically Bangla.  At present the Entire Area is Majority Bangla and thus categorized as one Region.

Tripura State - Mostly Hill and previously mainly inhabited by Hindu Tripuri - Kachari tribes, since 1947 has come to be inhabited by 2/3 Bangla Hindu and 1/3 original Hindu Tribes.

Barak Valley/Hills - half of the political area is hilly and half Bangal Plain. The Hills are/were inhabited by the same original Hindu Tribes as in Tripura state, as well as Bangla peoples since 1947. The Plain are and were always inhabited by ethnically Bangla people with the Political Region being 45% Hindu and 55% Muslim.

Most of the 8% Muslim of the State can be found in the areas as outlined.
Buddhist of the state are all in the concentration areas.
Besides the Christian concentration area outlined, Christian are found throughout the state.
