It differs from the south half both climatically and ethno-linguistically.
While the Western Ghats to the south are Tropical Wet, the North - Konkan region is Tropical Dry.
The language of the Konkan is historically Konkani.

Gomantaka sub-region : the junction between the North and South Western Ghat Regions and Konkani speaking.
